Being outside, that's where everything starts. The wind is blowing in your face, the sun is shining on your skin and life is everywhere surrounding you. Being outside, you know that you can't turn on the heating when it's cold, that you can't go to the supermarket for food, and that you can't take a shower. You have to prepare and make your place in the wilderness Since 2019 I have gained skills and knowledge about surviving outside. I know how to find water, how to know where north is, even without a compass, how you can make a fire when you have lost an arm, the plants that are edible and the plants that can cure you. These are great skills that I share happily. But the most important thing for me is the relation that develops when you gain new knowledge about nature, or a new skill that can be usefull in an emergency situation. You start to look at nature differently and that's what it's about. In my first novel Winterthur (van Oorschot 2022) I have incorporated a lot of knowledge and I regularly use the research that i did for the book in my trainings. So both the professions enrich eachother. De afgelopen jaren heb ik steeds meer kennis en vaardigheden opgedaan om buiten te kunnen leven en, in het ergste geval, te overleven. Ik weet nu waar je water kunt vinden, hoe je, zelfs zonder kompas, het noorden kunt bepalen, hoe je vuur maakt als je een arm bent kwijt geraakt, welke planten je kunt eten, welke je kunnen genezen. Het zijn handige vaardigheden die ik graag met mensen deel. Maar het belangrijkste vind ik de relatie die ontstaat als je nieuwe kennis opdoet over de natuur, of een nieuwe vaardigheid leert die van pas kan komen in een noodsituatie. Je gaat anders naar de natuur kijken. Dat is waar het om gaat.

In mijn debuutroman Winterthur (Van Oorschot 2022) heb ik veel van mijn kennis een plek kunnen geven, en het onderzoek dat ik voor het boek deed gebruik ik vaak tijdens de trainingen. Op die manier verrijken beide beroepen elkaar.
